Classic meme format, fonts and caption tips

The image macro format, bold white capitals with a black outline at the top and bottom of a picture, became the default meme style because it stays readable on any background. The outline is what makes it work: white text alone disappears on bright skies, while the dark stroke keeps every letter legible. Impact is the traditional font. Anton is a close open-source alternative that is loaded automatically, so your meme looks right even on devices without Impact installed.

Good memes keep the setup short on top and the punchline on the bottom, usually under eight words per line. Increase the font size for short captions and reduce it for longer ones rather than letting text cover the subject's face. JPG is best for photo memes because files are smaller and share faster in chats; choose PNG for screenshots or images with sharp text. This tool works with your own images and doesn't include a library of meme templates, so start from a picture you have the right to use.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded to make the meme?

No. The caption is drawn onto your image on a canvas in your browser, and the meme file is created on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account, watermark or tracking of what you make.

What font do memes use?

Classic memes use Impact, in white uppercase letters with a black outline. This generator defaults to Impact and falls back to Anton, a very similar free font it loads automatically, so the look is consistent across Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android.

Can I add only top text or only bottom text?

Yes. Leave either text box empty and only the other caption is drawn. You can also put several lines in one box by pressing Enter, which is useful for captions that need a pause.

Does it include meme templates?

No. The meme generator works with any image you provide, from your camera roll, a screenshot or a pasted image. A sample image loads at first so you can see how the captions look before adding your own.

Can I make memes on my phone?

Yes. Tap the box to choose a photo from your gallery, type captions with your phone's keyboard, and tap Download meme. On iPhone, the file goes to Downloads in the Files app, from where you can save it to Photos or share it.
