YouTube banner size and safe area explained
YouTube recommends uploading channel banners at 2560×1440 pixels, a 16:9 image with a minimum of 2048×1152 and a maximum file size of 6 MB. The full image only appears on TVs. Desktop shows a wide horizontal strip from the middle of the image, tablets crop that strip further, and phones show the narrowest part. The area that is visible everywhere is the 1546×423 box in the center of the image, so that is where your logo, channel name and any text belong.
Design the banner as one 2560×1440 image and think in layers. Fill the whole canvas with a background that still looks good when cropped, because TV viewers see all of it. Keep the important content inside the central 1546×423 box with some breathing room around it, since the exact crop varies slightly between apps and screen sizes. Avoid placing small text near the edges of the desktop strip, where wide monitors show it but phones cut it off completely.
Frequently asked questions
What is the YouTube banner size?
YouTube recommends 2560×1440 pixels for channel banners, with a minimum of 2048×1152, a 16:9 aspect ratio and a file size up to 6 MB. Logos and text should stay inside the central 1546×423 safe area so they are visible on phones, tablets, desktops and TVs.
What is the safe area for a YouTube banner?
The safe area is the 1546×423 pixel box in the center of a 2560×1440 banner. It is the only part shown on every device. On desktop a wider 2560×423 strip is visible, and on TVs the full image appears. This checker draws each of those zones over your image.
Why does my YouTube banner look cropped on mobile?
Phones show only the narrow center strip of the banner. If your logo or text sits outside the 1546×423 safe area, part of it is cut off. Turn on Dim outside mobile safe area to see what phone viewers will see, then move those elements inward.
Is my banner image uploaded?
No. The image is loaded and drawn with the HTML canvas in your browser, and the crop previews and downloads are generated locally. Nothing leaves your device until you upload the final banner to YouTube yourself.
Can I use the banner template in Canva or Photoshop?
Yes. Download the template PNG and place it as a top layer at reduced opacity, or as a locked guide layer, in Canva, Photoshop, Figma, GIMP or any other editor. Design underneath at 2560×1440, then hide the guide before exporting.
