- Review the cards: each shows the real pixel size, and sizes the video doesn't have are marked as not available.
- Click Download on the size you need, copy its image URL, or press Download all (ZIP) to save every version at once.
What you can do with Thumbnail Downloader
- Every thumbnail size

- Auto-generated frames
- Also fetches the three frames YouTube captures from the start, middle and end of the video, in the highest quality available.
- Works with any link format
- Accepts watch, youtu.be, Shorts, embed, live and music.youtube.com links, links with timestamps or playlists, and bare video IDs.
- One-click ZIP
- Download all available thumbnails in a single ZIP file, with each image named after the video ID and size.
- Real dimensions shown
- Each card displays the actual width and height of the image, and YouTube's placeholder images are detected instead of being saved by mistake.

- Shows the video title and channel name next to the ID so you can confirm you grabbed the right video.
YouTube thumbnail sizes and URLs explained
Every public YouTube video has a set of thumbnail images on YouTube's image server, i.ytimg.com, at predictable addresses such as /vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. The max-res version is 1280×720 and is generally available for HD uploads and custom HD thumbnails, while older or low-resolution videos may top out at sddefault (640×480) or hqdefault (480×360). Those 4:3 sizes add black bars above and below a widescreen picture, so for a clean 16:9 image choose maxresdefault or mqdefault (320×180).
People download thumbnails to study what works in their niche, build a reference board, create mockups, or recover their own artwork after losing the original file. Keep copyright in mind: a thumbnail belongs to the creator who made it, so reusing someone else's image in your own videos or marketing usually requires their permission. For research, private reference or your own content, saving a copy is a normal part of a creator's workflow, and this tool makes it a two-second job.
Frequently asked questions
How do I download a YouTube thumbnail in HD?
Paste the video link and click Download on the Max resolution card. That image is 1280×720 pixels. If the card says not available, the video has no HD thumbnail, and the Standard definition (640×480) or High quality (480×360) version is the largest one YouTube has.
Can I download the thumbnail of a YouTube Short?
Yes. Paste the Shorts link (youtube.com/shorts/…) and the tool reads the video ID the same way as a regular video. YouTube stores these images in landscape sizes, so a vertical Short may appear with dark bars at the sides in some versions.
Is this thumbnail downloader private?
Yes. Your browser requests the images directly from YouTube's image server and the title from YouTube's public oEmbed endpoint, so the link you paste never passes through a PanDev server. There is no account, no limit on downloads and no watermark added to the images.
Why does a size say Not available?
YouTube only creates the larger sizes when the source is good enough. Older videos, low-resolution uploads and videos that are still processing may lack a maxresdefault or sddefault image. When YouTube returns its small gray placeholder instead of a real image, the tool detects it and marks that size as not available.
Can I use a downloaded thumbnail in my own video?
Only if it's yours or you have permission. Thumbnails are creative work owned by the channel that made them. Downloading for reference, research or commentary is common, but republishing someone else's thumbnail as your own can lead to copyright claims against your channel.
