YouTube tag character limit and how tags work

YouTube allows up to 500 characters of tags per video. The count includes the commas between tags, and a tag that contains a space is counted with two extra characters because YouTube wraps it in quotes. That means a list of 30 short phrases can hit the limit sooner than you expect. This generator applies the same counting rule, so a selection that fits here should also fit in the Tags box in YouTube Studio without being rejected.

Tags play a minor role in discovery today. YouTube itself says they are mainly useful when your topic is commonly misspelled, and that titles, thumbnails and descriptions matter much more. Use a handful of accurate tags: your main keyword, a few close variations, common misspellings and your channel or series name. Avoid adding unrelated popular terms, since misleading metadata goes against YouTube's spam policies and can get a video removed.

Frequently asked questions

How many tags can a YouTube video have?

There is no fixed number of tags, but their combined length is capped at 500 characters, counting commas and the quotes YouTube adds around multi-word tags. In practice that is usually 15 to 30 tags. The meter in this tool shows exactly how much of the limit you are using.

Do YouTube tags still matter?

Much less than they used to. YouTube says tags mainly help when your topic is often misspelled, while titles, thumbnails and descriptions carry more weight. Adding a few accurate tags takes a minute and does no harm, but don't expect them to drive views on their own.

What is the difference between tags and hashtags?

Tags are hidden keywords entered in the Tags field of YouTube Studio. Hashtags are written with # in your title or description, are visible to viewers and link to a hashtag results page. This tool can copy your top three tags as hashtags to paste into your description.

Where do the tag suggestions come from?

They are generated in your browser from the words in your title and extra keywords, combined with common search modifiers such as how to, tutorial, for beginners and the current year. The tool does not pull live search volume, so check suggestions against what your audience actually searches for.

Is the tag generator free and private?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no usage limits. All tag generation happens locally in your browser, so your titles and keywords are never sent to a server or stored anywhere.
