How to write a YouTube description

  1. Pick a template (tutorial, vlog, podcast, product review or blank) and enter your video title for the preview.
  2. Write a hook in the intro box; the counter turns red once you pass about 150 characters.
  3. Add timestamps and links, then open Social links & extras for handles, a subscribe line or an affiliate disclosure.
  4. Type your hashtags and check the watch-page preview, the search snippet and any warnings.
  5. Copy the finished description or save it as a .txt file, then paste it into YouTube Studio.

What you can do with Description & Hashtag Builder

Four starter templates
Tutorial, vlog, podcast and product review layouts give you a proven structure to edit, or you can start from a blank form.
Above-the-fold preview
See your hashtags, title and the first lines of the description roughly the way they appear on the watch page before …more.
Search snippet preview
Shows the first 150 characters as a search snippet, so your hook and main keyword land where people actually read.
Socials and subscribe link
Turns handles into full links for Instagram, X, TikTok and your site, and builds a subscribe link from your channel handle.
Built-in checks
Warns about the 5,000-character limit, angle brackets, too many hashtags, a short hook and chapters that don't start at 0:00.
Copy or save as text
Copy the whole description in one click or download it as a plain .txt file to reuse on your next video.

YouTube description length and structure

A YouTube description can be up to 5,000 characters, but only the first two or three lines show before viewers click …more, and search results show an even shorter snippet. Use that space for a one or two sentence summary that includes your main keyword and tells people why to watch. Put chapters, links, credits and disclosures below it. If your title has no hashtags, the first three hashtags in your description appear above the title on the watch page, so choose them deliberately.

A clear structure helps viewers and YouTube understand the video. A typical layout is a hook, a subscribe line, chapters, links and resources, social profiles, an affiliate disclosure if you use affiliate links, and a few hashtags at the end. Keep hashtags relevant and limited to a handful, since stuffing in dozens can make YouTube ignore them. Descriptions can't contain angle brackets (< and >), and chapters only work when the first timestamp is 0:00.

Frequently asked questions

What is the character limit for a YouTube description?

5,000 characters. This generator shows a live count of the full description and warns you if you go over. Keep in mind that viewers see only the first couple of lines before clicking …more, so the most important information should come first.

How many hashtags should I put in a YouTube description?

Three to five relevant hashtags is a good range. The first three can appear above your title on the watch page when the title itself has no hashtags. A long list of hashtags looks spammy, and if a video has too many, YouTube ignores all of them.

Does this tool write the description for me?

It builds the description from what you enter. Templates give you example text and a structure, and the tool formats chapters, links, social profiles, a subscribe line and hashtags into a tidy layout. It does not use AI, so the wording stays entirely yours.

How do I add clickable timestamps to my description?

Put each timestamp at the start of a line followed by the chapter name, such as 0:00 Intro. YouTube turns them into clickable links, and if the list starts at 0:00 with at least three chapters of 10 seconds or more, they also become video chapters.

Is anything I type saved or uploaded?

No. The description is assembled in your browser as you type and nothing is sent to a server. If you want to keep a copy, use Save .txt to download it to your device before closing the page.
